Challenge
As the lead designer for Airbnb's intranet platform, I inherited a significant technical debt problem where our legacy infrastructure couldn't support Airbnb's modern Design Language System (DLS), creating a frustrating disconnect where I was designing with cutting-edge components that our outdated tech stack simply couldn't implement. As the sole designer working with a 12-person engineering team, I recognized this technological gap was becoming a critical bottleneck, preventing us from delivering cohesive, on-brand experiences and significantly slowing our development velocity.
Solution
I championed a strategic migration to Airbnb's "Pineapple" tech stack by building a compelling business case around speed, consistency, and team efficiency, demonstrating how this technical upgrade would unlock our design system's full potential and enable seamless design-engineering collaboration. The migration proved transformative—we rapidly shipped 10+ custom internal products in a fraction of our previous development time while maintaining visual and functional consistency with Airbnb's broader ecosystem, creating cohesive user experiences that reflected our brand standards across all internal tools.
